Forensic Psychiatry – What is It?


Forensic psychiatry is a medical subspecialty that combines research and clinical practice in the numerous areas in which psychiatry is applied to legal issues. While some forensic psychiatrists may specialize exclusively in legal issues, almost all psychiatrists, at some point, have to work within one of the many areas in which the mental health and legal system overlap.

The objective of a forensic psychiatrist is to give expert opinion to a reasonable degree of medical certainty, in the form of a written report, deposition or courtroom testimony in legal cases. Dr. Goldwaser was named as a “Distinguished Fellow” of the American Psychiatric Association – a special distinction “for exceptional contributions to the community and the profession of psychiatry.”

Dr. Alberto M. Goldwaser has conducted Civil, Criminal, and Administrative Forensic Psychiatric Examinations in State, Federal and Military courts in Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Texas, Puerto Rico, New Mexico, New York and New Jersey. He has provided expert opinions through preparation of narrative reports and testifying in depositions and courts.
